The Pechos
A wonderful spot for groundhandling and for getting started at the Risco de Famara. Whenever the west wind is on the Pechos, this is where we go – kite in and make our way into the Risco when it fits.
Canary Islands, Spain · Oct 2026 – Mar 2027
Our home in winter: volcanic soil, Atlantic wind and the Famara cliff right on the doorstep. Our base is Casa La Costa.
Warmer than your living room in January!
The place and its people
Lanzarote is black lava rock, white houses with green doors and the legacy of César Manrique. In the north lies Famara: a surfers' village on the beach, above it the cliff of the Risco, off the coast La Graciosa.
We stay at Casa La Costa in La Costa near Tinajo, in the quiet north-west of the island – away from the tourist centres and ten minutes from the Tenesar flying site. There is a saltwater pool, terraces with sea views and a large shared kitchen. In the evenings we eat together; in winter a Spanish cook prepares a meal for everyone once a week.
Experiences & what’s special
The north-east trade wind blows constantly and laminar on Lanzarote – good conditions for building up soaring and strong-wind groundhandling step by step.
At the Famara cliff there are launch sites at various heights. Depending on the wind strength we pick the right one – right up to evening soaring at Las Nieves.
Around the island there are flying sites for almost every wind direction. Add to that top landings, landing training on the beach and thermals over the volcanic craters.
What our training on Lanzarote gives you above all: soaring experience, confident handling of the paraglider in lots of wind – in groundhandling and at the launch site –, a completely new view of the “flying system” and the tools to read terrain: learn, expand, apply.
Pick your week. Every week is a training in its own right.

Launch sites
The spots along the Famara coast – if you know the Gull Soaring game, you know them already.
A wonderful spot for groundhandling and for getting started at the Risco de Famara. Whenever the west wind is on the Pechos, this is where we go – kite in and make our way into the Risco when it fits.
Large, flat launch site with around 140 metres of height difference: paragliders launch at Pechos II, hang gliders at Pechos I. Top-to-bottoms, soaring, broadband thermal flying and cross-country to the beach of Famara (8 km) or to the Mirador del Río (28 km) – plus groundhandling, Rein-KAI-ten and community.
Cliff launch with the biggest height difference on Lanzarote: 600 metres down to the landing field at the surfers' beach of Famara. Soaring along the cliff and in the bowl of Las Nieves, followed by a beach sundowner.
The view of Puerto Calero is magnificent. The evening flight with restitution thermals reaches as far as the coast (depending on your wing's glide performance), landing is on the hang-glider landing field just before Puerto Calero. During the day the site is strongly thermic and only for experienced pilots with thermal experience.
Two launch sites, depending on wind speed. Our favourite flying site in east-north-east winds, with a cross-country option – and gambas after landing on the beach.
For lots of wind, right above the Atlantic. Launch is from a large plateau 30 metres above the sea, which is also the landing field – depending on conditions for experienced soarers or relaxed, talented newbies. Visually insane; some have flown one-way to Playa de Papagayo, and the taxi is happy to pick them up. Afterwards it's off to Casa Tino: gambas al ajillo, café leche leche or ensalada César.
Seven minutes from Casa La Costa, right above the Atlantic – unassuming and with so much potential. Kai's personal favourite flying site on Lanzarote for manoeuvre flying in awesome air: launch over land with the option “fly over the water if it's going up – if not, go and land”. When it works, the conditions are magnificent: Kai's flying home.
The second site right next to Casa La Costa – this is where Kai had his first flight in a volcanic crater. Kai: “Half an hour of evening soaring at El Cuchillo is comparable to a three-hour flight in the mountains.” The scenery is magnificent, top landing practically compulsory (with the option of landing at the bottom). Always worth the trip when the sun drops into the sea at Tenesar while we fly in the crater until we have to switch on the lights on the tour bus.
Attention: flying site only from October to mid-February (see the information board on site). For Kai the most awesome flying site on earth, even ahead of the Risco de Famara: the most honest air, the option of soaring up 600 to 800 metres above the Atlantic, flying manoeuvres, back to the ridge and all over again – the lift band at times reaches a kilometre out from the ridge. The launch is exciting: Heli and Kai recommend a solid forward launch, with the option of ending the flight on the beach (at low tide) after 40 or 70 metres of height. A solid launch and a reliable landing approach are compulsory – on our courses we only fly here when it fits, otherwise we train.

After flying
At “Grandma's” everything is totally relaxed and chilled, and she loves what we do – and the best food in Famara is right here.
Tip: Gambas al ajillo – “unfortunately” Heli and Kai's recommendation once again
Before flying
Whether we fly is decided in the morning at the spot – the links are for following along.

Flying twice a day at two flying sites: hike & fly at Mala, soaring at sunset in El Cuchillo, Macher almost to ourselves and training at the Pechos. Plus news from Heli, Holger and Reini – and Mike Küng is coming to the island with his Parakites.
